Sue has been a driving force in KMTA since 1978. Over the years she held the office of President, Secretary, and Treasurer. She made it a priority to attend KMTA monthly meetings and tried to be of help wherever needed in such activities as KMTA's Chopin Competition. Sue was chair of Scale Olympics for the past 10 years. Sue's husband, Mike, did the computer record keeping for Spring Auditions for many years.
Sue began teaching piano and organ lessons in 5th grade. She was the choir accompanist at Burlington High School in the 1960's. She graduated from UW-Whitewater with a major in education and a minor in music. When her family moved to Kenosha, in 1971, their first major purchase was a piano. In 1973 she began teaching piano and organ in Kenosha. She took piano and organ lessons during her teaching career from teachers at Carthage and UW-Parkside, earning a Certificate of Piano Pedagogy from UW-Parkside.
For more than 20 years, Sue Childers was the organist at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Kenosha. She was a member of the Kenosha Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, holding the offices of President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Sue presently sings in the choir at Calvary Memorial Church in Racine, filling in on the piano and organ when needed. Sue has accompanied many junior and high school students in the WSMA Solo and Ensemble Competition.
Sue and her husband Mike have 3 married children and 7 grandchildren.
Sue Childers has been an irreplaceable advocate for KMTA, but is retiring this year. As always, she gives credit in her kind and generous style, and writes:
"Through KMTA, WMTA, and MTNA, I have met many wonderful and talented people. Being a member of these groups has made me a better and more professional teacher. It has been my pleasure to share music and life with my students through my years of teaching. I thank God for blessing my life through the gift of music!"
Thank you, Sue Childers, for the enormous blessings you have given to the Kenosha Community through your musical work!
